SEO silos are a powerful strategy for making your site more relevant and visible in search results.

But let’s be honest — that’s just a byproduct of creating a user-friendly website that provides valuable content to your audience.

By organizing your content into themed sections and creating stellar content for those sections, you make it easier for both search engines and users to navigate your site effectively.

If you’re eager to master content for SEO silos, you’re in the right place.

This article will guide you through the essential steps to create great content for SEO silos, ensuring your site stands out and serves your audience well.

What Is SEO Siloing?

SEO siloing organizes your website’s content into themed sections, or “silos,” to boost relevance and visibility in search results. SEO silos create a clear, logical structure.

This helps search engines understand the context of your content and strengthens your site’s authority on specific topics.

It also aims to provide complete answers to your website visitors for deeper exploration.

Users can easily find related content, and search engines can more effectively index your site, leading to higher rankings and more traffic.

In the image above for a power tools site, you can see a planned silo layout for three main sections that will support three primary products the site sells.

The top-level pages in green are the landing pages, and underneath each landing page, there are three supporting pages (though there could always be more). Each supporting page provides thorough information on the topic.

Planning Your Content for Silos

Creating content for silos takes some strategic planning. It starts with research on the core topics you want to target.

Identifying Core Topics and Keywords

To create effective silos, start by identifying your core topics and keywords. This involves a mix of research and strategic thinking:

Research and Select Main Themes

First things first: explore the main topics for your website.

Identify primary topics. Begin with broad themes that align with your business goals and audience interests. For example, a health and wellness site might focus on nutrition, fitness, mindset and lifestyle.

Explore audience insights. First, identify and get to know your target audience. Understand what they are searching for online. Use keyword research tools, surveys, social media listening and customer feedback to gather insights on their interests and pain points.

Perform competitor analysis: Examine your competitors’ content structure. Identify gaps in their content that you can fill or areas where you can provide more comprehensive information.

Using Tools and Techniques for Keyword Research

Next, take that initial research and use tools to find relevant target keywords and phrases that are reasonable to target.

Google Keyword Planner: Use Google’s tool to find keywords related to your themes. It offers search volume data and trends.

SEOToolSet, Semrush and Ahrefs: Use these tools to analyze keyword difficulty, competition and keyword suggestions in depth. They provide insights into what keywords your competitors are ranking for.

Advanced techniques: Long-tail keywords often have less competition and can attract more targeted traffic. For instance, instead of just “fitness,” consider “beginner fitness routines for women.” You’ll also want to consider natural language queries and conversational search patterns, which reflect how users phrase questions in today’s search environment.

Creating a Content Map

Once you have your core topics and keywords, the next step is to organize them into a coherent structure.

Outline main topics and subtopics. Create a detailed list of your main topics and break them down into subtopics. Each main topic should have several subtopics that delve deeper into specific areas. These will become the silos.

Create outlines. Create loose outlines of the information that should be covered on any given topic. To make the process more efficient, you can use AI-powered writing assistants like PreWriter.ai

Identify content gaps. Identify any gaps in your content map. Ensure that each subtopic is adequately covered and that there are no missing pieces that could provide additional value to your readers.

Example of a Content Map

Main Topic: SEO

Subtopics:

  • Keyword Research: Articles on how to conduct keyword research, tools to use, and case studies.
  • On-Page SEO: Guides on optimizing titles, meta descriptions, headers, and content.
  • Link Building: Strategies for acquiring backlinks, outreach techniques, and tools.

Technical SEO: Content about site speed optimization, mobile-friendliness, and structured data.

Creating a content map helps visualize your silo structure, making it easier to see connections between topics and ensure all relevant content is included.

Content Requirements

The first step in creating keyword-rich content is to determine how much content is needed to be competitive in search. Knowing the required content volume can be empowering and essential for achieving high rankings.

To estimate the necessary content, you can use advanced search operators like the “allintitle:” as a quick directional signal to gauge how competitive a keyword may be. However, for a more accurate assessment, rely on SERP analysis tools and keyword difficulty metrics.

Allintitle command. Use the “allintitle:” command to find how many pages in Google’s index use the keyword phrase within their title tag.

  • Example: allintitle: beginner fitness routines for women
  • This gives an idea of how targeted the content is towards the specific keyword.

These tools help analyze competitors and understand the content landscape, enabling you to create a robust content strategy.

A quick tip: You can find the number of results it generates by clicking “Tools.”

Creating High-Quality Content for SEO Silos

Creating high-quality content is crucial for the success of your SEO silos. Here’s how you can ensure your content stands out:

  1. Originality and relevance: Make sure your content is unique and directly addresses your audience’s needs. Think about the questions they have and the problems they need to solve. Providing fresh insights that can’t be found elsewhere will set your content apart.
  2. Depth and detail: Go beyond surface-level information. Dive deep into your topics, providing thorough explanations, detailed examples and supporting data. Comprehensive content not only helps your readers but also signals to search engines that your page is a valuable resource.
  3. Readability and engagement: Write in a way that’s easy to read and keeps your audience engaged. Use headings, subheadings, short paragraphs and bullet points to break up text.
  4. Accuracy and trustworthiness: Ensure all your information is accurate and backed by reputable sources. Citing credible references builds trust with your readers and enhances your site’s authority. Double-check facts and keep your content updated to maintain accuracy.
  5. Multimedia integration: Enrich your content with various types of media. Videos, images and interactive elements can cater to different preferences and make your content more engaging. This helps retain visitors and also improves your SEO performance by increasing the time spent on your page.

Creating Optimized Content

You’ve created that high-quality content. Now, it’s time to put the icing on the cake. Optimizing content is the key to making sure search engines and visitors find the content you’ve put so much effort into.

Here are some steps to consider:

  • Craft compelling meta tags
  • Structure content with clear headings and subheadings.
  • Include internal and external links, and make sure you are following proper linking practices for silos.
  • Use heading tags (H1, H2, etc.) for user experience.
  • Include keywords naturally in the content.
  • Ensure the URL structure is clean and descriptive.
  • Add alt text to images for better indexing.

Other optimization strategies that can impact the performance of content include:

Mobile Optimization

  • Use responsive design for a seamless experience across devices.
  • Optimize page load speed for mobile users.
  • Ensure touch-friendly navigation and buttons.
  • Avoid intrusive interstitials that hamper the mobile experience.

Sitewide Optimization

  • Improve site speed and performance.
  • Use breadcrumb navigation for a better user experience.
  • Implement a comprehensive internal linking strategy.

Server / HTML Optimization

  • Optimize server response time.
  • Optimize for Core Web Vitals and page experience metrics.
  • Use browser caching and content delivery networks (CDNs).
  • Ensure secure and efficient server configurations.

Advanced SEO Methods

  • Implement structured data (schema markup) for rich results.
  • Experiment with voice search optimization techniques.
  • Focus on authority building through digital PR, high-quality content and brand signals rather than traditional link-building tactics.
  • Optimize for conversational search and natural language queries, which reflect how users interact with today’s search experiences.

Monitoring and Auditing Silo Content

The first rule about silos: don’t let your silos get stale. A content audit helps evaluate your website’s content to identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. Here’s how to do it:

Improve Content Readability

One of the first things you can do to refresh content is make sure it’s more readable.

  • Evaluate content relevance. Check if topics are still relevant to your audience and business goals.
  • Check for accuracy and update facts. Ensure all data, statistics and references are current.
  • Assess quality and structure. Make sure the content is well-organized, clear and comprehensive. Update or overhaul as needed.

Write New Content

Sometimes new content is necessary to fill gaps or address new requirements:

  • New industry trends: Have there been recent developments in your industry?
  • Expanded service offerings: You may need to highlight new products or services.
  • Evolving audience needs: Address the changing preferences of your target audience.
  • New keywords: Target new high-potential keywords identified through research, and add new webpages to your silo.

FAQ: How Do I Organize My Website Content for SEO to Improve Rankings and User Experience?

Organizing your website content for SEO is a critical step in ensuring that your site is both user-friendly and search engine-friendly.

The process begins with understanding the importance of a well-structured website.

A logical structure helps search engines understand the relationships between different pages on your site, which can improve your rankings for relevant keywords.

Additionally, a well-organized site enhances the user experience by making it easier for visitors to find the information they need, which can lead to increased engagement and conversions.

The first step in organizing your content is to group related pages into silos or categories. Each silo should represent a specific topic or theme relevant to your business.

For example, if you run a health and wellness website, you might have silos for nutrition, fitness, and mental health.

Within each silo, create a top-level page that provides an overview of the topic and links to subpages that cover specific aspects of the topic in more detail.

This hierarchical structure helps users navigate your site and also signals to search engines the importance of each page within the context of your site.

Keyword research is an essential part of organizing your content for SEO. Identify the search terms your audience uses and leverage that to ideate topics.

As you create content, be sure these keywords are incorporated naturally into the page’s content, headings and metadata.

Additionally, use keyword-rich anchor text for internal links to reinforce the relevance of your pages.

Finally, regularly review and update your content to keep it fresh and relevant. Remove outdated or duplicate pages, and ensure that all links are working correctly.

Use analytics tools to monitor the performance of your site and identify areas for improvement.

Maintaining a well-organized and up-to-date website can improve your SEO performance and provide a better experience for your users.

Action Plan

  1. Review your current website structure to identify areas for improvement.
  2. Define the main categories or silos for your content based on your business goals. Group related pages into these silos to create a logical hierarchy.
  3. Conduct keyword research to identify primary and secondary keywords for each page.
  4. Create a top-level overview page for each silo that links to subpages.
  5. Use internal linking to guide users through your site and improve crawlability.
  6. Incorporate keywords naturally into the content, headings and metadata of each page.
  7. Use keyword-rich anchor text for internal links between related pages.
  8. Create an XML sitemap and submit it to search engines for indexing.
  9. Implement breadcrumb navigation to improve user experience and SEO.
  10. Regularly review your content to ensure it is accurate and up-to-date. Remove or consolidate duplicate or outdated pages.
  11. Monitor your site’s performance using analytics tools. Adjust your content and structure based on user behavior and performance data.
  12. Conduct competitor analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.
  13. Solicit feedback from users to improve your site’s usability and content.
  14. Perform quarterly audits of your site structure and content.

A site migration is the perfect time to assess the current state of a website’s content. Does it need to be refreshed, optimized or replaced? Do you need new content?

A migration forces you to take a good look at what’s working and what isn’t—an opportunity that doesn’t come around too often.

Conducting a Content Audit

A content audit is the process of evaluating the content on a website to identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. A typical process may look something like this:

Run Analytics Tools

Using analytics tools, you can get an inventory of all the webpages on a site and the key metrics for those pages. Tools like Google Analytics, SEOToolSet and Screaming Frog are all useful here.

Create a Spreadsheet

Document the URLs you need to investigate and include data for each URL like engagement metrics and ranking data.

Prioritize Pages

Next, you’ll create a plan of action for those webpages. You might organize the project in chunks, focusing first on top-performing pages and then on other types of webpages.

Here’s an example of how you might categorize the content initiative:

Top performers: Focus on refining the most important pages first. These are pages with high rankings, traffic and engagement or those crucial to your brand, products or services.

Potential performers: Identify pages that could rank higher or attract more traffic with improvements. Enhance content on these pages, combine similar topics into long-form guides, and use 301 redirects as needed.

Irrelevant pages: Handle outdated or irrelevant content by redirecting to related topics, the home page or removing the page entirely. See: How to Remove a Webpage.

Related: How do I determine which outdated content to keep, update or remove?

Improving Content Readability

One of the big initiatives before a site migration will be to refresh the copy on your main pages and the supporting content throughout the site such as on your blog.

So next, look critically at each piece of content and consider the following:

Evaluate Content Relevance

Start by assessing whether each piece of content’s topic is still relevant to your audience and business goals.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this topic still relevant to our target audience?
  • Does this content align with our current business objectives and branding?
  • Has there been a shift in industry trends that makes this content outdated or irrelevant?

If the content is no longer relevant, consider removing it or redirecting it to a more pertinent page. If it’s still valuable, evaluate its accuracy and effectiveness.

Check for Accuracy and Update Facts

Next, scrutinize the accuracy of the information:

  • Are the statistics, facts and data up-to-date?
  • Have there been recent developments or new research that should be included?
  • Are there any outdated references, such as old events, obsolete technologies or past predictions?

Update any outdated information to ensure your content remains credible and informative.

Assess the Quality and Structure

Evaluate the overall quality and structure of each piece:

  • Is the content well-organized and easy to read?
  • Does it have a clear purpose and message?
  • Are there any gaps in the information that need to be filled?

Consider whether the content could benefit from a rewrite or restructuring to improve clarity. Sometimes, a minor update is good enough; other times, a complete overhaul is needed.

For more on how to boost your content quality using Google’s E-E-A-T principles, see: 6 Steps to Boost Your E-E-A-T Factor This Year.

Writing New Content

Sometimes you will need to create new content ahead of a site migration, for instance, to fill in content gaps or enhance your SEO strategy.

Here are some examples of when new content may be necessary:

  • New industry trends. If the business has seen significant changes or when there are emerging trends that the existing content does not address.
  • Expanded service offerings. If the business has introduced new products or services, you need content that highlights these offerings.
  • An evolving audience. If the audience’s needs and preferences have evolved, and your current content no longer meets their needs.
  • Search intent gaps. If you have gaps in your content, you can identify these and build topics into SEO silos. Use keyword research to understand how your target audience is searching, then map those queries to core topics and supporting subtopics. This approach improves visibility across a wider range of queries and supports stronger internal linking across your site.
  • Localized content. If you’re expanding into new geographic markets, creating localized content that speaks directly to these new audiences can improve your local SEO and attract more region-specific traffic.

When you create new content strategically, you can enhance your site’s visibility and search engine rankings, which sets a solid foundation for the migration.

Optimizing the Content

Once the content has been refreshed, you’ll want to make sure every page is optimized with basic SEO best practices.

Meta Tags

Meta tags are pieces of HTML code on a webpage that describe its content. They include title tags and meta descriptions.

These tags live in the “head” section of a webpage and help search engines understand what the page is about. They can also influence how your page appears in search engine results.

For more on this topic, see:

Internal Linking

Internal links are hyperlinks that connect one page of a website to another page within the same domain. These links come in various forms, such as main navigation menus, footer links, contextual links within content and links to related content.

Internal linking offers many benefits, including improved user experience and engagement, and helping search engines crawl and index a site’s content more efficiently.

As you optimize your pages ahead of a site move, consider best practices like those outlined in: A Jam-Packed Guide on Internal Linking for SEO.

Heading Tags

Headings structure a webpage’s content, helping users and search engines understand how information is organized. Use headings to segment topics and subtopics in a logical, scannable way. We recommend ensuring the first heading tag is an <h1>, followed by <h2>, <h3>, etc., like a table of contents. Use CSS for font styling and avoid using heading tags for navigation elements.

For detailed guidance, see: What Are Heading Tags and Why Are They Important to SEO?

Keyword Optimization

Optimizing for search intent first requires using keyword research to identify themes, then building comprehensive content. When thinking about keyword inclusions, you’ll want to use natural language, related entities and semantically connected terms. This helps search engines better understand context and can improve visibility across a broader set of queries.

For more details, read: How a WordPress SEO Plugin Can Help You Optimize Your Content with Keywords.

Image Optimization

Images enhance content and provide additional ranking opportunities, but they can slow page load times. There are many ways to optimize images for SEO, such as resizing images, using descriptive file names with keywords and leveraging plugins for WebP or AVIF formats.

For more tips, see: How to Improve Google Image Search Ranking.

Alt Attributes

Alt attributes describe images for the vision-impaired and improve accessibility, which is a ranking factor for Google. Ensure every image has accurate alt text and use empty alt attributes for decorative images.

More information can be found in Google’s Accessibility Guidelines.

Video Optimization

Videos enhance engagement and provide SEO benefits. There are a lot of ways to optimize videos for search by following some of the best practices in this article: Quick Beginner’s Guide to Video Marketing and Optimization.

Structured Data Markup with Schema

Structured data helps search engines understand page content, strengthening a page’s relevance for a search and potentially enhancing SERP listings with rich snippets. There are countless schema types to choose from for any given webpage.

For further reading, see: What Is Structured Data and Why Is It Important For SEO? And: The Power of Schema Markup: Boost Your SEO and Website Visibility.

Other Structured Data

In addition to schema markup, you can structure your data with HTML tables, lists, breadcrumbs and TL;DR summaries to enhance readability and featured snippet potential.

Social Meta Tags

Social meta tags control how content appears when it’s shared across platforms, and can boost its engagement. Most platforms, including Facebook and LinkedIn, rely on Open Graph tags, while X uses X Cards and Pinterest supports its own rich pin metadata.

URL Optimization

URLs should be descriptive, short and contain keywords. Use dashes instead of underscores. Proper URL structure aids SEO and user experience.

Fully Qualified Links

Use fully qualified links (starting with https://) instead of relative URLs to avoid crawl issues and ensure clarity for search engines. For a detailed comparison, read: Absolute vs. Relative URL Linking.

Tracking and Optimizing Content After a Site Migration

After executing your site migration, the next step is to monitor and track the performance of your content. This helps you identify any issues that might have arisen during the migration process.

Track Key Metrics

Assuming you already have Google Search Console and GA4 properly set up, you’ll monitor key metrics such as:

  • Rankings: Keep an eye on your keyword rankings to see if there are any significant drops or improvements.
  • Organic traffic: Check for changes in organic traffic. There will be fluctuations initially and in the long term, a site migration should improve traffic levels.
  • Bounce rates and session duration: Evaluate user engagement by monitoring engagement rate, engaged sessions and average engagement time (GA4).
  • Conversion rates: Track conversion rates to ensure that your content is moving visitors down the marketing funnel.

You can also track user behavior and get feedback by using heatmaps like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity to see where users click, scroll and spend the most time.

Additionally, collect customer feedback directly through surveys or direct comments to understand user experience.

Conduct Regular Content Audits

Audit your content regularly to make sure it remains optimized and relevant. This includes checking for outdated information and opportunities to update and enhance the content.

Remember, ongoing content optimization and vigilance are key to long-term success post-migration.

FAQ: How Do I Optimize Website Content to Support a Smooth and Successful Site Migration?

The key to optimizing content for a site migration is to treat it as both a content strategy initiative and an SEO preservation effort.

Start by identifying why the migration is happening and how it will impact your content.

Are you restructuring your site, consolidating pages or expanding into new topics? Defining this upfront ensures your content strategy aligns with business goals.

Before the migration, conduct a comprehensive content audit to evaluate what is performing well and what needs to be improved, consolidated or removed.

Focus on search intent, topic coverage and overall content quality rather than simply preserving existing pages.

This is also the time to identify content gaps and opportunities to build stronger topic clusters that support your core pages.

As you prepare for migration, map old URLs to new ones and ensure that high-value content is preserved through proper 301 redirects.

Update internal links so they reflect the new site structure and reinforce key topic relationships.

Optimize on-page elements such as titles, headings and metadata to align with current search intent and improve clarity.

During the migration, validate that all content is accessible, indexable and properly linked.

Monitor for issues such as broken links, missing pages or incorrect redirects that could impact performance. After launch, use tools like Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console to track engagement, rankings and indexing.

Post-migration, continue refining your content based on performance data.

Update underperforming pages, expand high-value topics and maintain a regular audit process to ensure your content remains relevant and aligned with search behavior.

Action Plan

  1. Define content goals and how they align with the migration.
  2. Conduct a full content audit (performance, quality, relevance).
  3. Identify pages to keep, update, consolidate or remove.
  4. Map search intent to key pages and topic clusters.
  5. Identify content gaps and plan new content.
  6. Create a URL mapping and redirect strategy for all content.
  7. Update internal links to reflect the new structure.
  8. Refresh titles, headings and metadata based on intent.
  9. Ensure content is accurate, up to date and aligned with brand messaging.
  10. Validate that all content is crawlable and indexable on staging.
  11. Test redirects and internal linking before launch.
  12. Monitor performance in GA4 and Google Search Console after launch.
  13. Fix broken links, redirects and indexing issues quickly.
  14. Compare post-migration performance against benchmarks.
  15. Continuously update and expand content based on performance data.
  16. Conduct ongoing content audits to maintain relevance and performance.

Being relevant to your audience isn’t something that just happens. You have to work at it. Nowhere is this truer than in the Google Search results.

And, one of the best ways to stay relevant in the search results is to create a trusted brand with a good-performing website and credible, helpful content.

Google’s E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust) is a set of quality principles that Google uses to ensure its search results are top-notch.

A lot goes into achieving E-E-A-T, and that’s why I created this condensed guide so that you can take the most impactful steps to boost your E-E-A-T this year.

Quick Refresher on E-E-A-T

E-E-A-T, which stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, is one of Google’s most discussed quality concepts.

The concept comes from Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines (SQRG), a document designed to help human evaluators who are hired by Google to judge the quality of the search results.

SQRG serves as a feedback mechanism for Google to test whether its algorithm updates are producing higher quality results.

While E-E-A-T is not a direct ranking factor, it indirectly influences the algorithm.

The raters’ collective feedback helps Google engineers refine and benchmark the performance of its algorithms.

John Mueller reiterated at Search Central Live NYC in 2025 that while E-E-A-T underpins how Google assesses quality overall, its algorithmic impact isn’t the same across all topics.

For example, for YMYL (“your money or your life”) queries, where accuracy and trust can affect someone’s health, safety or finances, E-E-A-T plays a much greater role.

For more everyday subjects, such as recipes or hobbies, Google doesn’t scrutinize as intensely.

Why E-E-A-T Matters More Than Ever

As AI plays a larger role in determining which content earns visibility, E-E-A-T’s relevance is growing.

According to Ahrefs, 74% of new webpages include AI content.

Google saw this coming and was sure to create specific spam rules around AI content, and reiterated the need for content that’s rooted in E-E-A-T

Text excerpt from a Google Search Quality team post advising creators to focus on high-quality, people-first content demonstrating E-E-A-T, whether AI-generated or not.
Image credit: Screenshot, “Google Search’s guidance about AI-generated content”

Evidence from the U.S. v. Google LLC antitrust case supports the need for E-E-A-T.

The court document suggests that the same type of quality factors in E-E-A-T likely influence how AI systems assess which pages are trustworthy enough to ground their answers.

From the court documents:

RankEmbed and its later iteration RankEmbedBERT are ranking models that rely on two main sources of data: [redacted]% of 70 days of search logs plus scores generated by human raters and used by Google to measure the quality of organic search results.

All of this together signals why E-E-A-T is more important than ever to a website’s and brand’s visibility in the search results.

1. Content Quality

Arguably, one of the most important things to get right if you want to achieve E-E-A-T is great content. It can also be one of the most challenging.

Quality is often in the eye of the beholder. And in this case, that eye belongs to Googlebot.

There are ways to meet Google’s quality guidelines, and here are some tips:

  • Know user intent: Knowing user intent matters for creating relevant content. Map keywords to user search intent (informational, transactional, etc.) and prioritize addressing their actual needs.
  • Create an authentic experience: Demonstrating firsthand experience in your content has become crucial. Share personal insights, stories, examples and practical knowledge to build trust with audiences.
  • Incorporate data-backed insights: Use stats, research and expert opinions to substantiate claims.
  • Update older content: Regularly refresh articles with new insights to maintain relevance and authority. I advise spending 50% of the time creating new content and 50% of the time refreshing older content. For more, check out my article on Search Engine Land, “Creating New Content vs. Optimizing Old Webpages: Which Is Better for SEO?
  • Use AI for efficiency, not a replacement: You can use AI tools to streamline content creation, but you shouldn’t replace your high-level talent. Get the AI piece wrong and risk violating Google’s spam policies. For more, see my article on Search Engine Land on how to balance speed and credibility in AI-assisted content creation.

At the end of the day, what we should really be doing is investing in quality talent. Long before Google told us what quality was, we had to figure it out — and many marketers did and still do.

If you have:

  • A professional writer or editor on your team who understands marketing and does good work
  • A good SEO who is helping to set the SEO strategy
  • The right tools to bring it all together efficiently

… you have a winning recipe for quality.

2. Author Credentials

Who wrote your content? Inquiring minds (like Google) want to know:

Something that helps people intuitively understand the E-E-A-T of content is when it’s clear who created it. That’s the “Who” to consider. When creating content, here are some who-related questions to ask yourself:

Is it self-evident to your visitors who authored your content?
Do pages carry a byline, where one might be expected?
Do bylines lead to further information about the author or authors involved, giving background about them and the areas they write about?

If you’re clearly indicating who created the content, you’re likely aligned with the concepts of E-E-A-T and on a path to success. We strongly encourage adding accurate authorship information, such as bylines to content where readers might expect it.

When you have authoritative sources behind the content you create, you’re signaling to Google that you have a quality resource.

That’s why spending extra time on your author credentials can pay off when wanting to boost the E-E-A-T factor.

Here are some tips to consider:

  • Create detailed author bios: Attach these bios to content like blog articles. Include relevant qualifications, certifications, awards and experience.
  • Link to author profiles: Additionally, provide links to other places people can learn about and connect with the author, such as LinkedIn profiles, academic papers or other authoritative works.
  • Add schema markup: Article schema marks up any written content, and Author schema provides Google with more context and information about the author. This can help boost the authority of the content and also provides information for Google to create richer search results about the author (for example, in the Knowledge Panel). You can check out an article by Jason Barnard about Google recognizing content creators at Search Engine Land.

3. Quality Backlinks

Even though Google says backlinks don’t carry as much weight in the ranking algorithm anymore, a quality backlink is still a vote of confidence for your website.

We still believe in the power of the right kind of links, and we have seen sites with fewer quality links beat their competition with many more, less relevant links.

Research suggests that links still do matter, as outlined by this study published at Internet Marketing Ninjas, which shows that 96.3% of the sites that ranked in the top 10 have over 1,000 unique domain backlinks.

A data table displaying the distribution of referring domains across different ranges, showing that the majority of sites fall between 1,000 and 100,000 domains.

Just some of the ways you can earn quality links are by publishing original research, collaborating with thought leaders on content and good old-fashioned PR, like being featured in a news story.

For more on this, check out our ebook, “The New Link Building Manifesto: How to Earn Links That Count.

4. Organized Content

Say you walked into a library, and there was no catalog system.

Books were stacked on shelves and overflowing on floors. Horror novels were mixed with biographies, and children’s books with romance novels.

This illustrates the importance of grouping the content on your site in a user-friendly way. And the users are both website visitors and search engine bots.

SEO siloing is a technique I invented more than 20 years ago as a way to organize content that supports the way people search for information.

It creates an excellent user experience and boosts your site’s relevancy for search.

Here is a simplified explanation of how SEO siloing looks in practice:

  • Conduct thorough keyword research. Choose groups of related keywords that represent a person’s search sequence when researching a topic, product or service. For example, the generic keyword you might want to rank for could be “cordless power tools” and the supporting keywords might be “cordless drills,“ cordless planers” and “cordless hammers,” and even more long-tail queries like “what is a good torque for a cordless drill?” This mirrors the natural way of searching, where people start with a broader search and refine it as they learn more.
  • Create pillar pages: Develop an in-depth article or guide for the broad topic / keyword (like cordless power tools) and then create supporting webpages for each of the supporting keywords.
  • Link it together: Organize related pages in the website directory using proper URL structures (physical siloing) and connect the relevant content using contextual links embedded in your content (virtual siloing) to create a themed silo structure around your main topic. This is like the catalog system in the library; it helps people and search engines know that the content is related and where to find more information about the topic.
A flowchart diagram categorizing power tools into cordless, electric, and gas-powered types, listing specific tools like drills, saws, and compressors under each category.
Example of SEO siloing structure for a power tools website.

After executing this strategy, you have built an authoritative website that’s rich with information for every stage of a person’s search journey.

Effectively, this makes your site relevant to rank higher in the results. When people click through to your site, you can keep them longer because they don’t have to go elsewhere for the information they need.

5. Content Length

Does Google care about word count to rank your content? Yes and no.

While Google says word count isn’t a ranking factor, conventional wisdom suggests that if you are writing about a topic that requires depth, then 250 words will not help you compete in an environment where the top-ranked pages are 2,000 words.

Plus, what Google is saying when they say word count isn’t a factor is really that there’s no minimum word count requirement to rank, and not to write a bunch of words just to get to a target number.

Instead, create sufficient content to answer the query in a way that is helpful and of high quality — something that adds value to what is already out there.

This is the reason I created the target word count feature in our WordPress SEO plugin. This feature looks at the top-ranked content in real time and gives you a target word count based on who is winning.

Screenshot of an SEO dashboard highlighting the "Content Word Count" statistic, showing a current count of 685 against a goal of 1,567 to 2,363 words.
Summary tab in the Bruce Clay SEO WP plugin shows word count targets.

This demystifies the process of target word count so that you don’t write 3,000 words when 1,000 will likely do.

Of course, always use your intuition as a guide. You likely know how much needs to be said on a topic to be helpful. Write that, and not a word more.

I address this topic further in my article on SEO myths

6. Brand and Reputation Signals

Your brand’s reputation is a key component of the E-E-A-T framework.

Search engines look beyond individual articles to see how your brand is perceived across the web, through things like customer reviews, mentions in trusted media and more.

These signals strengthen not only your “authoritativeness” and “trust” but also how AI-driven platforms recognize and represent your brand.

Reviews, Case Studies, Testimonials

Almost 100% of people read reviews before they make a purchase online.

Reviews, case studies and testimonials are indicators of a business’s reputation. And reputation is intrinsically linked to trust.

Google talks more about this in its Search Quality Rater Guidelines, and I highlight this in my guide on the basics of E-E-A-T where Google says:

  • “Reputation research is especially important for detecting untrustworthy websites and content creators.”
  • “A website’s reputation is based on the experience of real users and the opinions of people who are experts.”
  • “… look for independent reviews, references, recommendations by experts, news articles, and other sources of credible information about the website.”

You can do a lot of things to help build trust on your website, including:

  • Developing case studies that show how you have positively impacted customers.
  • Featuring customer testimonials, verified reviews and ratings (consider video testimonials to make them more authentic).
  • Integrating trust signals like badges, industry affiliations, awards, certifications or client logos.
  • Using schema for ratings and reviews
  • Create a “Contact Us” page and an “About Us” page to allow visitors to learn about you and connect with you quickly and easily.

Other Brand-Building Factors

Your reputation outside of your website is just as important. Consider these factors:

  • Social listening and online reputation management. Establish a process for monitoring, managing and responding to online reviews across platforms. Apply the same approach to social listening, as you track brand mentions, sentiment and conversations within your industry. Importantly, engage with your community. For more, read “Is Sentiment an SEO Trust Signal?
  • Public relations. Create newsworthy stories around your brand to earn coverage from trusted publications and journalists. These mentions (and backlinks) can strengthen your brand. Align your PR outreach with SEO goals to secure placements that build both awareness and visibility in search.
  • Guest contributions: When you intentionally craft a strategy to contribute to your industry, you can further build your brand. This can be in the form of podcast interviews or guest articles on reputable sites. Focus on adding value and not just collecting links (make sure you don’t fall into the trap of paid guest posting).

FAQ: How do I optimize my website for E-E-A-T to improve credibility and boost search rankings?

E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, and these factors are used by Google to evaluate the quality of your content and trustworthiness as a source of information.

E-E-A-T is a critical component of improving your website’s quality and user experience. In turn, this builds trust and can enhance search engine rankings.

To build E-E-A-T into your website and its content, you need to focus on creating high-quality, accurate and well-researched content that is authored by credible experts in your field.

Ensure that all content is written or reviewed by qualified professionals with verifiable credentials.

Include detailed author bios that highlight their expertise and link to their professional profiles or previous works.

Keeping your content up-to-date is also essential for maintaining relevance and authority.

When looking at the authority of your site, you’ll want to think about building your brand’s reputation within your niche.

Earning backlinks from reputable websites, engaging or partnering with industry influencers or peers, focusing on public relations and publishing original research are effective ways to enhance your site’s authority.

Trust can be achieved by instilling confidence in your audience.

This includes things like displaying clear contact information, showing terms of service and posting privacy policies. Secure connections and transactions are non-negotiable.

Action Plan

  1. Conduct a comprehensive content audit to identify gaps in expertise, outdated information or areas lacking credibility.
  2. Collaborate with qualified experts or hire professional content writers to create or review content.
  3. Implement detailed author bylines and bios to showcase the credentials and expertise of your content creators.
  4. Develop an editorial calendar to ensure consistent updates to your content.
  5. Create a centralized resource library or knowledge base with authoritative content on your website.
  6. Optimize your website’s design and user experience to enhance accessibility and engagement.
  7. Use schema markup to provide search engines with structured data about your content and website.
  8. Earn quality backlinks by networking with reputable websites and industry influencers to get your content in front of the right people.
  9. Showcase testimonials, case studies and success stories to highlight your brand’s credibility.
  10. Ensure your website’s technical SEO is optimized for crawlability and fast loading speeds.
  11. Focus on creating long-form, in-depth content that addresses user queries comprehensively.
  12. Engage with your audience on social media platforms to build a community and demonstrate industry presence.
  13. Partner with other trusted brands or experts to co-create content or share resources.
  14. Implement robust privacy and security measures to protect user data and earn trust.
  15. Respond promptly and professionally to customer inquiries or feedback on all platforms.
  16. Publish original research or studies to position your brand as a leader in its domain.
  17. Regularly audit online reviews and ratings to ensure they reflect positively on your brand.
  18. Update your “About Us” page with current achievements and team credentials to strengthen trust.
  19. Conduct competitive analysis to benchmark your efforts against industry leaders.
  20. Develop a long-term strategy for scaling E-E-A-T initiatives as your brand grows.

You sift through pages of content, looking for those pages that truly resonate with your audience. You’ve got clutter and lots of it.

That’s where a website content audit comes in.

Despite its benefits, 37% of marketers have never conducted a website content audit — probably because it can feel like an episode of “Hoarders.”

But a well-executed audit can transform your online presence from good to outstanding.

In this article, I’ll uncover why revisiting and analyzing every page on your site is essential for SEO growth.

    1. Know Your Goals
    2. Gather and Organize Your Content
    3. Analyze Your Data

Understanding Website Content Audits

What Is a Content Audit?

A content audit scrutinizes every piece of content on your website to gauge its performance and relevance.

This includes blog posts that have been gathering dust, landing pages from yesteryears and everything in between.

The goal? Get a crystal-clear picture of what works, what doesn’t and how close or far off you are from nailing those SEO and marketing goals.

Why Conduct a Content Audit

It seems like a huge undertaking, and you might be thinking: Why bother? Here are three reasons:

  1. Staying relevant. What worked two years ago may not cut it today. Information changes, which means publishers need to evergreen their content so that it’s up to date.

Trends change, so content strategies need to keep up with the times, too — and search engine algorithms.

Case in point: Google’s March 2024 updates targeting unhelpful and AI-generated content. Many websites were de-indexed and many more were badly hurt.

Every website publisher had to take a hard look at their content strategy.

  1. Streamlining content. We’ve all been there: drowning under tons of content without knowing what still holds value.

A thorough audit helps declutter this mess by identifying winners worth doubling down on and losers ready for retirement (or revamp).

  1. Driving organic traffic. There’s been more than one study published over the years that shows only a small percentage of pages on a site drive the majority of traffic.

An Ahrefs study revealed that 96.55% of all pages in their index got zero traffic from Google, and 1.94% got between one and 10 monthly visits.

A pie chart from Ahrefs showing that 96.55% of pages in their index get zero traffic from Google, emphasizing the difficulty of SEO.

Conducting audits can lead to major clean-ups, resulting in boosted user satisfaction and more organic traffic.

The bottom line? Embrace the chaos because at the end of the journey awaits more helpful content and better SEO outcomes.

Tools and Resources for Website Content Audits

It’s not possible to do an efficient and well-informed website content audit without the help of good analytics tools and guidelines for how to create quality content.

Analytics and SEO Tools

Google Analytics

Google Analytics offers a deep dive into your website visitors journeys no matter where they came from. It’s an essential tool in any website content audit because it offers detailed insights into the metrics you are tracking.

Google Search Console

While Google Analytics gives data on a broad range of channels, Search Console is more focused on the performance of your website in Google Search and is critical in gaining SEO insights.

Screaming Frog

Screaming Frog is a great tool in any content audit. As a site crawler, it pulls all the URLs on a site and offers a ton of valuable SEO information on each URL, which you can slice and dice to uncover opportunities for better content.

SEOToolSet

I created the first tool inside the SEOToolSet back in the 90s, and we have been evolving the software ever since.

Today, the SEOToolSet brings together a suite of SEO tools you can use in a content audit, including the ability to:

  • Track your search engine rankings from search engine markets worldwide.
  • Compare your webpages to the top-ranked competitors and SEO best practices.
  • Proactively uncover issues that could impede search engine indexing.
  • Check critical page elements and easily search across your website to save time making site edits.
  • Sort data tables by any column, paginated from 10 to 100 rows per page, and print or export in bulk to CSV format for use in spreadsheets.

Any good content audit will bring together a variety of tools to analyze the data and develop a plan of action. The magic happens when they work together.

E-E-A-T

Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T) are the pillars of quality, according to Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines. Understand these factors, so that you can create content and websites that uphold quality and build trust with visitors.

Helpful Content Guidelines

Google offers more guidance on how to create helpful, people-first content. Running through their list of questions offers food for thought when evaluating the content you create.

Spam Rules

Bad content continues to be the bane of Google’s existence.

In March 2024, Google updated its spam policies to focus on AI-generated content that offers little to no value.

3 Initial Steps in a Website Content Audit

1. Know Your Goals

Zig Ziglar once said if you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time. Setting a clear goal is the first step in any successful content audit.

Here are some general goals you might be striving for:

  • Increased website traffic: More traffic from search and social.
  • Better engagement: Keeping people on the page and on your site for more time.
  • Stronger brand: Ditching outdated info that makes you cringe and better uphold your brand as a thought leader.
  • Increased conversions: Moving visitors to the next step in the customer journey.

In truth, you will likely want to achieve all these goals, and you will achieve them when you do a content audit right.

Keep in mind though that conversions may be more of a focus for some of the sales-type landing pages, whereas SEO may be more important for a subset of your webpages like your blog or service pages.

Depending on your goal, you will deploy different methods for improving the content.

If it’s conversions, you’d sink resources into conversion optimization. If SEO, you’d spend more effort on search optimization.

2. Gather and Organize Your Content

Gather every piece of content — from blog posts in years past talking about trends to other musings that you wouldn’t dare publish today.

Here are a few next steps:

  • Pull together a list of all URLs on the site using Screaming Frog or similar tools.
  • Categorize the types of content by type first — think blogs versus landing pages versus FAQs — and then by topic (e.g., SEO tips versus social media hacks).
  • Dive deeper by tagging which stage of the buyer journey each piece caters to — Awareness? Consideration? Decision? This may help you prioritize efforts further.
  • Mark what needs updating or axing altogether (after you 301 redirect it, of course) based on performance metrics from SEO tools.

3. Analyze Your Data

Once you are clear on your goals for a page, you can pick metrics that directly relate to the goal.

Then you’re going to explore what the metrics might be telling you about the content:

  • Traffic sources: Where is the majority of traffic coming from and why?
  • Organic traffic: How much organic traffic is the page getting? Why or why not? How is its visibility in the search results?
  • Bounce rate: Why did they leave?
  • Engagement: What is it about this page that makes people stay longer? What is it about this blog article that makes people want to comment?
  • Conversions: What made them take the next step? Or why aren’t they?
  • Links: Who is linking to this page? Why is it so popular, or not popular at all (lack of promotion)?

Next Step: Develop a Plan of Action

You’ve gone through the initial steps and surfaced a ton of data and hypotheses about the performance of your webpages. Now what? Prioritize

Prioritize Your Next Moves

When we do SEO audits here at Bruce Clay, we always prioritize our recommendations from things that will move the needle the most, first.

Remember that not all content will hold the same weight. Starting with the top performers will always be a good first step.

Not everything needs fixing at once (and trying to do so is a recipe for burnout). Start with what will give you quick wins, or has been bothering users most according to feedback or metrics like bounce rates and page views.

If meta descriptions are missing across several high-performing pages, that’s low-hanging fruit ripe for picking.

Or maybe you’ve noticed some duplicate content issues. Time to consolidate or rewrite so every piece is original.

Some tips:

  1. First off, categorize your audit discoveries by potential impact and effort required. High-impact, low-effort fixes? Those are your sweet spots, so tackle them first.
  2. Next up, think long-term but act short-term. Which actions can you take now for immediate results while also setting the stage for future wins?
  3. Last but not least, set clear deadlines and assign responsibility. Accountability is key here. A task without a deadline is just wishful thinking.

Repurpose and Optimize Existing Content

A big part of updating your old content will be to repurpose and optimize old webpages.

A blog article from two years ago with solid advice just needs a little facelift to shine again. And why create something new when you can polish up the old?

Once you’ve updated the content itself, you’ll want to think about optimizing the content and the webpage as a whole.

One of the primary things we want to see from a content audit is improved organic search traffic. Here are some things you’ll want to consider as you audit your content:

  • On-page SEO: There are endless ways to improve a webpage. To figure out what to do, you have to balance SEO best practices (non-negotiable things) with what’s likely required for the page based on the keywords you are targeting and competitive analysis to help refine your focus. Check out our SEO checklist for more.
  • Duplicate content: Got repeat offenders? Addressing duplicate content is one of those things you can and should prioritize.
  • User experience: Your site’s performance can impact user experience and rankings. Dig deeper into the fixes that can impact this including site speed, mobile friendliness and Google’s Core Web Vitals.
  • Content architecture: Is the site’s content organized for SEO success and user experience? Dive into SEO siloing to get this right.

Your existing content has potential; don’t let it go to waste. By carefully adjusting and enhancing your content, you’re bound to witness significant boosts in both visitors and interactions.

Keeping Your Website Content Fresh and Relevant Moving Forward

A website content audit will be an ongoing project. And it’s never really “done.”

People often ask how much effort they should put into keeping their older content fresh. The answer is it depends on things like the type of topic and keyword (is it a topic that deserves freshness or is it inherently evergreen?).

In general, though, I recommend spending 50% of the time updating old content and 50% of the time creating new, quality content.

(See my article on optimizing old content vs. creating new content for more.)

Audit on a Schedule

To ensure you’re never letting things slip through the cracks and start piling up again, here are some things to consider:

  • Audit regularly: Regularly visit each page of your site. Consider whether the content remains relevant and accurate.
  • Create an action plan: Decide whether each piece should be kept as is, optimized with updates or SEO tactics, removed completely, repurposed into another format (video maybe?) or combined with other posts to create something great.
  • Schedule updates: Got pages tied to dates or events? Set reminders to refresh them so they’re never out of step with reality.
  • Rinse and repeat: This isn’t a one-and-done deal. Your website evolves; so should your content. Do this audit regularly, and watch your site stay relevant.

Planning for Future Content Creation

When you’re not strategic in the content you can create, it can quickly become irrelevant. Staying ahead involves designing a forward-looking plan to help ensure relevance for longer.

SEO Siloing

SEO siloing offers a framework for the content you can create now and in the future. That way, you’re not just throwing darts in the dark.

By focusing on the most relevant keywords for your business, and methodically crafting webpages that align with the customer journey, you will have a roadmap to spark ideas for current and future content.

Content Planning

Here are some ideas for keeping things organized as you create new content:

  • Choose your content types: Map out what types of content you will feature on your site. This may largely be driven by your competition and a whole-SERP strategy.
  • Create a content calendar: Organization is key but leave room for spontaneity.
  • Analyze and adjust: The only constant in life (and SEO) is change. A regular review of what’s working — or not — lets us tweak things for better performance.

Above all else, keep track of progress and adapt as needed. This journey doesn’t stop at “fixes.” It’s about evolving continually to achieve and maintain E-E-A-T.

Final Thoughts

In this era where attention spans are shorter than ever, every detail counts towards creating experiences online users love, which ultimately boosts both traffic and conversions.

Quick Solutions

FAQ: How do I perform a comprehensive SEO content audit so that we get results?

To do a comprehensive content audit for SEO, you need to evaluate all the content on your website to determine its effectiveness, relevance and alignment with SEO goals.

This begins with creating a complete inventory of your website’s pages, and then gathering data on metrics such as rankings, traffic and engagement. Identify the content that is valuable, needs improvement or should be removed.

As you are doing this, evaluate the relevance of each page related to its target keywords and the intent behind the search.

This includes checking whether the content meets the expectations of both search engines and users, and identifying any technical SEO issues.

Additionally, assess the content against Google’s E-E-A-T framework (does it have the experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust it needs?).

After the evaluation, take action.

You’ll want to rewrite, combine or even remove weak or outdated content, and high-performing content can be refined and expanded as needed.

Put technical SEO strategies into place so that the content aligns with your SEO objectives and also enhances user experience.

After the audit, you will have effectively established a framework that you can use for ongoing content maintenance and improvement.

From this point, make regular audits part of the workflow.

This helps you maintain the site as a valuable, authoritative resource that people want to rely on and search engines want to rank.

Action Plan

  1. Create a complete inventory of all pages on your website using tools like Screaming Frog and Bruce Clay’s SEOToolSet.
  2. Categorize your webpages by type, such as blog posts, product pages or landing pages.
  3. Gather performance metrics on all pages, including visibility, rankings, traffic and engagement rates.
  4. Identify the target audience and intent for each page, and use this as a foundation for keyword research to ensure you are targeting the right queries on your pages.
  5. Assess the content against Google’s E-E-A-T principles to establish credibility.
  6. Compare your content to competitors to identify areas for improvement.
  7. Rewrite or update weak or outdated content, and remove content that no longer serves a purpose or adds value. Implement 301 redirects for removed or merged pages to preserve link equity.
  8. Expand on high-performing pages as needed.
  9. Add new content to address gaps in topics or user needs.
  10. Optimize on-page elements, including headings, meta tags, formatting and more.
  11. Review all technical SEO elements like page performance (speed and ease of use), alt text, schema markup, URL parameters, etc.
  12. Don’t forget small but important tactics like evaluating each page’s metadata for accuracy and keyword optimization or checking internal links for functionality and relevance.
  13. Optimize any non-text content like images and videos for SEO.
  14. Monitor the results of the implemented changes, and adjust strategies based on performance data.
  15. Schedule regular content audits to maintain quality and relevance.

Marketing team meeting around a laptop with an overlay text reading “Why your content team needs to think SEO,” highlighting SEO-focused content strategy.

Your brand is publishing consistently, but content is being created in isolation. Yes, you have an SEO team or individual expert, but there is no solid collaboration between content creation and SEO.

This means that some — maybe a lot — of content is created and published to the company website without considering how people search and how Google displays results.

This disconnect can cost you traffic.

Instead, content creators can learn more about how search works so their content creation is more informed.

Thinking like an SEO analyst doesn’t mean content creators need to do someone else’s job, but it does mean that they have access to more strategic data and better internal collaborations before they write.

This can make the process more efficient and can drive more of the metrics that matter to marketing teams.

In this article:

The Content vs. SEO Divide – It’s Holding You Back

In many enterprise settings, content and SEO are siloed.

Often, content teams are focused on brand messaging, storytelling and campaign support. SEO teams are focused on search intent, technical performance and SERP visibility.

In theory, these should work hand-in-hand, but in practice, they often don’t.

Some content creators may have access to some SEO data (aka target keywords), but it’s typically not all content creators.

And very often, content is created and then SEO is tacked on after. This can result in optimizing content that may already be missing the mark.

The result is a missed opportunity. For instance, content can be irrelevant for search intent and/or for key SERP features your brand should be found in.

When collaboration is an afterthought, your content is reactive, not strategic.

It might hit the right tone or even drive some traffic, but it’s rarely built to win in a competitive, fragmented search landscape where content structure, format and intent match matter more than ever.

When content and SEO are aligned from the start, you reduce rewrites, move faster and create content that can perform in the search results.

Imagine your team working seamlessly together, creating content that performs from day one.

How do I reduce inefficiency and improve collaboration between content and SEO teams?

Start with Search Behavior

Most brands aren’t just creating blog posts. They’re doing more: publishing one-off landing pages, product updates, partner announcements and resource center content, often on tight timelines and without SEO oversight.

That’s normal. Of course, not everything needs to be run through an SEO audit.

But without a basic understanding of Google, most of these pages won’t do much. They’re live, but they can also be invisible.

Most content planning still starts with what the business wants to say. However, SEO analysts don’t begin with a message. They begin with a question: What is the user trying to solve?

They analyze keyword trends, evaluate search intent, review what’s already ranking and identify gaps, long before anyone starts writing. Those insights shouldn’t stay siloed.

When content teams adopt that mindset, they stop guessing and start creating content with built-in demand.

Remember: Today’s SERPs aren’t just a list of 10 blue links. They’re filled with AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, video carousels and knowledge panels — all pulling from content that’s been structured.

When content creators across your organization understand how the SERP works, they can design content that is more likely to get seen, without slowing down the process.

That might look like:

  • Creating content driven by search intent. Instead of throwing up a page without regard to how people search, get the data that shows what type of content is showing up for a keyword search.
  • Optimizing content ahead of time. Creators can build things into their content process by, for example, using headers and subheaders that align with People Also Ask questions, including summaries or bulleted steps that AI Overviews and snippets can easily pull from or formatting the page in an SEO-friendly way.

Here’s how the workflow shifts when content teams think like SEO analysts from the start. The “old way” of content and SEO working together goes something like this:

  • The SEO team provides a keyword.
  • The content team writes based on assumptions.
  • The SEO reviews post-publish, finds format or intent mismatches.
  • Content gets revised (sometimes more than once).
  • Results are delayed.

A better way is something like the following:

  • SEO and content review the SERP together.
  • Agree on the best format and core user intent.
  • Content is structured to match what works, such as snippets, FAQs, summaries, etc.
  • There’s less rework, faster approvals and better SERP performance out of the gate.

Giving content teams the tools upfront makes their work more effective from the start.

Tools That Help Content Teams “Think SEO”

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention some of the tools we provide that can help content creators jump into the SEO analyst’s shoes. Let’s explore some tricks of the trade for content teams.

SEO Training

Our in-person and online SEO training is designed to help marketers and content teams understand what drives visibility in search.

The training walks through key concepts like search intent, competitive analysis, SERP interpretation and content architecture, all from a strategic, content-friendly perspective.

The goal isn’t to turn writers into SEOs. It’s to give them the confidence and knowledge to:

  • Know how search works.
  • Understand the real search intent behind a keyword.
  • Structure content with SEO fundamentals in mind.
  • Create assets that are easier to rank, update and repurpose.

This foundational SEO literacy can really improve collaboration between SEO and content teams, and ultimately lead to better-performing content across the board.

SEO WordPress Plugin

If you want content creators to think like analysts, the Bruce Clay SEO plugin for WordPress offers a built-in solution.

It gives writers and marketers real-time access to the kind of data that usually only SEOs see, and helps bridge the gap between the content and SEO divide.

Here are some unique features:

  1. Real-time, page-level recommendations. Powered by our robust SEOToolSet®, content creators get real-time, customized SEO guidance based on the top-ranking competitors, including word‑count targets, keyword usage and readability recommendations.
  2. Multi-keyword optimization and distribution insights. The plugin supports multiple focus keywords per page and highlights where and how often each appears, ensuring even semantic variations are factored into the first draft.
  3. Built-in analytics from GSC and GA. There’s no need to toggle between tools. Indexed SERP impressions, CTR, traffic and device data live inside the plugin. This helps writers prioritize updates based on performance.
  4. Page health alerts and mobile checks. Alerts flag missing H1s, meta gaps, broken links or mobile usability issues, so creators see SEO issues that may hinder the content’s success.
  5. Author and site-wide insights. See which pages or authors are performing best. This can help content teams replicate high-impact content.

Bonus: The plugin integrates seamlessly with Yoast if you’re already using it!

Final Thoughts

Content teams don’t need to become SEO analysts, but collaboration is key for the best results.

When content is planned with search behavior in mind, structured for the modern SERP and measured with the right metrics, it’s more likely to perform.

With the right mindset, tools and collaboration, your marketing team can stop guessing and start building content that drives more traffic.

Ready to make storytelling and search work as one?

Let’s Discuss How We Can Help!

Quick Solutions

FAQ: How can I practically improve collaboration between SEO and content teams to produce more effective content?

It’s not uncommon for digital marketing departments to split SEO and content into separate teams.

The result, however, is fragmented efforts and lack of alignment.

The fix is content and SEO teaming up from the start. When they build the content together, it has a better chance to drive more performance from the search results.

Bring SEO in Early

When SEO joins the content planning sessions, there is less back‑and‑forth later.

Early steps include discussing keywords and intent, picking a format (listicle, how‑to, case study or even video) and giving the content creators a SEO checklist to incorporate into their work.

Offer Training and Share Resources

Teaching content creators the basics of SEO helps them better understand their role in SEO success.

A short, in-house workshop or a more in-depth SEO training course like ours at Bruce Clay can help build their foundational SEO knowledge.

Keep Communication Open

Search habits and Google updates change fast, so constant communication is key for making SEO and content a true team.

Short daily or weekly stand‑ups, a brief email overview of trends or current events or a chat channel can keep people informed.

Use Data and Tools

Decisions backed by data help content creators better understand their targets.

This means that for SEOs, if a dashboard flags falling click‑through rates, the teams can quick;ly collaborate on how to improve the content in question.

Conclusion

Putting SEO and writing together right from the start means a smoother workflow and getting more from your content creation efforts.

SEO Articles - What they are and how to write them
This post updated on February 18, 2025.

You’ve just written an article. And you think it’s pretty good. But is it fit to compete with the millions of other articles in Google’s index on the same topic?

In this post, I’ll explain how to boost your articles to be the most relevant for a person’s search on the topic.

Read to learn:

What Is an SEO Article?

An SEO article is a piece of written content, like a blog post, featured on your website as a page with a unique URL.

An SEO article educates, informs, and entertains your target audience with expertise and quality.

An SEO article is also optimized for search engines to have a better chance of getting on Page 1 of the search results.

Why Should You Write an SEO Article?

Here are six reasons why you should write an SEO article.

1. Web Content Is Why Google Exists

Webpages, including articles, are what search engines like Google store in their index.

When someone performs a search, the engine analyzes their query and matches it to the most relevant indexed items.

Without these webpages, Google would have nothing to show users in its search results.

2. Google’s Algorithm Is Getting Smarter, but Still Needs Help

An SEO article is optimized for search so that it can help search engines better understand what the topic is about (see Google’s Search Essentials for more on this).

This increases the chance it will be considered relevant to a query and show up in the top results.

“SEO—short for search engine optimization—is about helping search engines understand your content, and helping users find your site and make a decision about whether they should visit your site through a search engine.”

-Google, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Starter Guide

3. Being Found for a Search Can Impact Your Revenue

The organic search channel drives more than 50% of traffic to a website on average (and up to 64% for B2Bs). Organic search is also responsible for up to 59% of revenue over other channels.

4. Establish Your Expertise and Authority on a Topic

Google places more value on websites with high expertise and authority, and a well-written article is one of the key ways to demonstrate this.

“High quality MC [content] shows evidence of effort, originality, talent, or skill. For informational pages, High quality MC must be accurate and consistent with well-established expert consensus when such consensus exists.”

-Google, Search Quality Rater Guidelines

5. Delight Your Audience

SEO articles can result in things like return visits to your site, more time on your site viewing other content and conversions.

Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other factors discussed here.

Users know good content when they see it and will likely want to direct other users to it. This could be through blog posts, social media services, email, forums or other means. That can also translate to relevant links to your site, another SEO factor.

“Google’s automated ranking systems are designed to present helpful, reliable information that’s primarily created to benefit people, not to gain search engine rankings, in the top Search results.”

-Google, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content

6. Beat Your Competition in the Search Results

A search-optimized article uses data to make it better. Find out what the top-ranked content is doing on the same topic. Then, you can meet or exceed it.

For more, see: SEO Should Beat the Competition, Not the Algorirhm.

How Do You Write an SEO Article? 7 Key Steps

To write an SEO article, follow these seven key steps:

Step 1. Define the Document Specs

At the top of your document, create a table with key details for new content. This table helps you organize all the details of a well-optimized article before you publish.

First, specify the basic article specs such as the topic, target keywords, meta title, meta description and URL.

You might add other things, too, like the date written, a place for notes about the content and anything else that is helpful to you and your teams.

You may not have all the information to fill in this table upfront, but it’s there to populate as you go along in the process.

Step 2. Research Keywords (aka Search Queries)

What is your audience typing into Google’s search bar when looking for the info you have on your website?

In its SEO Starter Guide, Google explains the very basics of keyword research:

“Think about the words that a user might search for to find a piece of your content. Users who know a lot about the topic might use different keywords in their search queries than someone who is new to the topic. For example, some users might search for “charcuterie”, while others might search for “cheese board”. Anticipating these differences in search behavior and writing with your readers in mind could produce positive effects on how your site performs in search results.”

You want to have at least one primary search term you optimize your article with and up to two secondary keyword phrases.

Does that mean you have to use more than one? No. But it can be an advanced strategy for some.

For more, check out:

Step 3. Identify and Analyze the Competition

Did you know your online competition is the top-ranked pages for your keywords? These are the webpages in which you are vying for attention in the search results.

Once you have your keywords, you can begin a competitive analysis. Using the right SEO tools — like our AI-powered content development suite at PreWriter.ai or the SEOToolSet® — you can find out which pages are ranking in the top spots on Google for your search query.

With PreWriter, you can research and structure your SEO article before writing by analyzing top-ranking pages. It gives you:

  • A full-page analysis of the top search results for your keyword.
  • Outlines based on content published by competitors to show you how to make it better.
  • Keyword recommendations based on real search intent.
  • Meta descriptions and related questions for more relevance.

And with the SEOToolSet, you can:

  • Track keyword rankings over time.
  • Look at top-ranking competitors to see how they optimize their content.
  • Evaluate title tags, meta descriptions and keyword usage in competing pages.
  • Assess readability and content length to match or improve content that performs best.

Remember that all of this is in real-time before or during the writing process, not after.

Step 4. Create Expertly Written Content

Google wants the top search results to have an element of expertise. That’s because Google wants its users to be satisfied with its results. Quality content keeps your audience happy, too.

That said, before you write an article, make sure you have at least one of the following:

  • Subject matter expertise or a subject matter expert you can interview.
  • Writing ability or a professional writer or editor.
  • Tools to help with efficiency and optimization.

From Google’s helpful content documentation, Google recommends the following ways you can create quality content:

  • Self-assess your content using their list of questions on quality and expertise.
  • Provide a great page experience.
  • Focus on people-first content.
  • Avoid creating search engine-first content.
  • Get to know E-E-A-T and the Search Quality Rater Guidelines.
  • Ask “who, how and why” about your content.

Keeping Google’s guidelines in mind for writing quality, helpful content, you will now create the content.

How you create the content is up to you, but keep in mind it must pass the quality test no matter how it’s made.

Generative AI is helping many businesses create content. (You can check out our AI tool, PreWriter.ai.)

For those businesses that already have skilled writing pros, AI tools are helping them automate certain parts of the content creation process.

For other businesses that lack the in-house expertise of a writer, they are also relying on AI to draft content. But, you must be careful when going this route.

AI cannot replace human creativity, insight and experience — and Google knows this. In March 2024, Google unleashed new spam policies on AI-created content and many sites were penalized.

The bottom line is this: Just because we have AI as a tool, we should not view it as a replacement for talent.

We must keep our brand image and audience in mind, and make sure the content we create is still innovative.

So where does that leave businesses? No matter how you are using AI, there needs to be a system in place to preserve quality.

  • Some businesses may prefer to have writers create the content but use AI to automate parts of the process, like outlines, research and editing.
  • Other businesses might like to have Gen AI deliver first drafts, and then have subject matter experts edit the content for accuracy and impact.

I’ve written about this topic at length, and you can explore more here:

Step 5. Optimize the Content in Your SEO Article

At this point, you should have both the well-written article and your keywords. Now is the time to optimize.

It’s worth noting that an article will be naturally optimized when you write it. That’s because if you write enough (quality) words on a subject, the words you use will describe the content well.

So why optimize? To help your great content better compete in the search results.

Using specific keyword queries in your content tells Google that this piece of content is a better match to the query of the searcher than other content out there.

First, figure out how you can switch up a few words or phrases with your key terms.

Rule No. 1: Always make sure it reads well. Slapping your keywords in any old place without regard to grammar can make your article look spammy to Google and annoy readers.

In general, you want your keywords to be evenly distributed throughout the content from top to bottom.

For more on this, see:

Step 6. Review the Content

Next up — your SEO article needs to be reviewed and edited to make sure it’s written well, free of errors and follows Google’s guidelines before you publish. How this process looks will depend the size of your company and/or circumstances.

An important thing to keep in mind: if you decide to publish guest posts on your site, hold the content to the same standards you would as if you made it in-house. Substandard content can hurt your site quality.

For example, guest posts done wrong can cause a site to get hit with a manual penalty by Google.

Step 7. Track the Content’s Performance

Writing an SEO article is not a set-it-and-forget-it approach. You will want to track the performance of that article and learn from the data.

You can see how an SEO article is performing in search by using Google Analytics. You’ll want to look at things like:

  • The number of page views.
  • Average time on page.
  • What queries are bringing search traffic to that SEO article.

With this data, you can:

  • Learn what’s working and not working in comparison with your other SEO articles.
  • Update the content with new, more relevant keywords.

Compete Better in the Search Results with Optimized Articles

An SEO article is a quality, search-optimized article written for readers and search engines. Optimized articles have a better chance of ranking higher and bringing in more qualified web traffic.

Follow the steps we’ve discussed, and you’ll win over your readers and search engines in no time.

FAQ: How can an SEO article improve my website’s visibility and help it drive more organic traffic?

SEO articles have a ton of benefits. They give value to your audience with helpful information, establish you as an expert in your niche, and when done right, they bring in more leads, customers, sales and revenue. Include SEO articles in your marketing strategy if you want more online visibility and traffic.

Start by doing keyword research to learn what your audience is searching for. Add those words throughout your content. Engaging articles keep people coming back for more and tell search engines you have quality material to offer.

Next, focus on on-page SEO. Optimize meta titles, descriptions and header tags to structure your content effectively. Consider including images, videos and infographics to increase engagement with readers.

Link building is key to increasing any website’s credibility and user experience — be sure to add new articles with timely information regularly to keep repeat visitors.

A mobile-friendly website makes users and search engines happy. Focus on making your website fast, and use secure connections for a better user experience.

SEO articles are an effective way to increase website visibility and drive organic traffic. Optimize them using the tips above to attract visitors who are likely to convert into long-term customers.

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Determine who it is you wish to reach with your article.
  2. Use tools like PreWriter.ai, SEOToolSet, Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs or Semrush to do keyword research.

It’s content-planning time, and you’re feeling the pressure of what topics to cover in the coming months. Not knowing which type of content is the most effective for your SEO program can result in subpar ROI.

You’re going to invest the time and resources into your content, so make it count. In this article, I’ll outline three content formats that are proven to get results so that when you’re ready to plan your SEO content calendar for the month, you can build them into your workflow:

  1. Long-Form Blog Posts
  2. Listicles
  3. Video Content

1. Long-Form Blog Posts

Here’s one format that’s been proven to drive results — but I’ll preface this by saying that there is no “one” uniform word count requirement to rank in the search results.

Rather, you need to see what the competition is doing and match them or do better, and make sure the word count is appropriate for the topic.

So, for some keywords and topics, it may only require 500 words to be sufficient, while others will do better at thousands of words.

The bottom line is to always let the research drive the word count. And remember that Google has said there is no minimum word count for ranking. (For more, check out Google Looking for a Minimum Word Count on Webpages?.)

That said, there has been some research that suggests longer form articles perform better and drive more traffic.

For example:

  • HubSpot research found that articles between 2,250 and 2,500 words attracted the highest organic traffic. Posts of more than 2,500 words garnered the most social media shares and inbound links. This is supported by earlier research from the company that found the optimal blog post length for SEO is between 2,100 and 2,400 words.
  • A Semrush study found that articles that are more than 3,000 words attract nearly three times more traffic compared to those with 900 to 1,200 words. That same study found that longer-form content got four times as many social shares and 3.5 times more backlinks.
  • Backlinko conducted research that showed long-form content receives 77.2% more backlinks than shorter articles.

How to succeed at long-form posts:

  • Pick a good topic driven by keyword and competitor research. Make sure the topic supports your overall website themes, and analyze competitor content to see what’s out there first. Think about angles such as “ultimate” guides, industry studies or trend analysis.
  • Create a thorough outline. You can use AI for help here, like our tool, Prewriter.ai, to exceed what the competition is doing with their content.
  • Give detailed insights with practical tips, examples and data. There’s a lot that goes into creating quality content. I suggest reading Crafting High-Quality SEO Content: A Comprehensive Guide for more on this.
  • Make it readable. Long-form posts require effort to read. Make it easier for readers by using heading tags (like H2, H3), bullet points and visuals to break up the text.
  • Optimize the content for search with relevant keywords. Be sure to review the use of important keywords in the content, such as in the meta tags, headings, introduction of the article and throughout the text. You can check out this article on how a WordPress SEO plugin can help you optimize your content with keywords for more information on how to make this piece easier.

Of course, you can also read the research in the three studies linked above for more tips on how to formulate your long-form articles.

2. Listicles

Listicles — who doesn’t love them? They work because they are easy to consume. And they’re effective.

According to BuzzSumo research, listicle-type headlines get more engagement on social media. More research from BuzzSumo and Moz supported this, also showing lists tend to get more links.

“Content, Shares, and Links: Insights from Analyzing 1 Million Articles,” Moz.com data.
Source: “Content, Shares, and Links: Insights from Analyzing 1 Million Articles,” Moz.com

Here are some key features of a successful listicle:

A catchy headline. Listicle-focused headlines with a number in them usually get more engagement — if you’re already doing this, you’re ahead of the game. But you can always put a little extra effort into making it stand out. Check out my article on crafting headlines, and lean on AI tools to give more variations of what you’ve got.

Skimmable structure. By nature, listicles are easy to read because they are numbered. But make sure you are also using heading tags, keeping paragraphs on the shorter side and using bullet points where you can.

Numbered list format. Oddly enough (pun intended), odd numbers are sometimes more effective. So, when you’re thinking about how many “things” to include in your listicle, consider using an odd number.

Practical and actionable advice. The meat of the content will be the guidance you provide. Be sure to include something actionable for the reader to use. Keep each section concise and focused. Strike a good balance between providing enough detail to be useful without overwhelming readers. You can link out to additional resources for deeper dives.

Social media-optimized. Because listicles are so attractive on social media, make sure you incorporate ways for your readers to share the content easily, and have great preview images.

3. Video Content

Video content is important to a holistic SEO program. Consider that 90% of videos in Google’s search results come from YouTube and that the video-sharing platform is also ranked No. 2 in most popular social media networks.

According to Wyzowl, 86% of video marketers say video has helped them increase web traffic, and 87% say video has directly increased sales.

Wyzowl.com video marketing statistics chart showing marketers who say video has increased traffic.
Source: “Video Marketing Statistics 2024,” Wyzowl.com

Here are some things to consider as you create and optimize video content:

Choose the right platform. As mentioned, YouTube videos show up in the results a majority of the time. It’s smart to consider YouTube a part of your overall digital marketing strategy.

Define the topic. Before you even create the content, you’ll want to target the queries that most often show video results in search, and then make videos for them. Google’s Gary Illyes agrees: “When you see a video universal on the web search results, then you probably want to start thinking about creating a video for that.”

Understand the technical formatting. Videos that are up to two minutes long have the most engagement, according to Wistia. Also, consider the resolution. Most videos will only need a resolution of 1080p. Take note of your sound quality, too.

Optimize the videos. YouTube SEO includes tactics such as using your targeted keyword(s) in your video file name, optimizing the video’s title with targeted keywords, creating a detailed video description and optimizing it with targeted keywords. Over 90% of online experiences start in the search bar of a search engine, so the significance of SEO is impossible to overstate. Still, search engine optimization projects and initiatives routinely flop due to a lack of effort — many businesses simply don’t do the work.

One of the biggest hurdles standing in the way of SEO success is putting out enough valuable content to stand out.

Content creation is among the top challenges in SEO — a common bottleneck that stalls progress. Falling short of the demands surrounding content creation can spell trouble, even when you have a well-built SEO strategy.

Below, I’ll share how you can use AI for content to overcome obstacles keeping you from achieving your SEO goals.

The Challenges of Content Creation in SEO

Of the myriad of functions the average business handles, content creation is one of the hardest to get right. In the context of SEO, it requires you to truly connect with your target audience and appease search engines at the same time.

Let’s look into five stumbling blocks that often thwart content strategies, resulting in stalled projects and unmet SEO goals.

1. Time and Resource Constraints

Creating top-quality content demands lots of time and resources — two things most companies just don’t have.

Chances are you already know you need solid writing chops to create well-researched, interesting and optimized content. But that’s not all. On top of that, crafting such content involves research, planning, drafting, editing and SEO optimization.

Each step takes substantial time and various types of resources, all of which add up as you scale up content production. The process can be incredibly overwhelming.

When companies have few or limited resources, these issues are that much more difficult. The bulk of businesses haven’t hired or contracted personnel to head up content creation and SEO, so they juggle these roles themselves. Because of this strain, these companies have trouble on two fronts — creating top-notch content and publishing enough of said content on a consistent schedule.

The result? An SEO strategy that lacks the content fuel needed to drive it forward.

2. Creativity Fatigue

Even the most skilled marketers can encounter creativity fatigue. Against the never-ending pressure to produce good content, these professionals can quickly run out of ideas.

I often see this in industries where content topics can get redundant; it’s hard to reimagine and approach topics from new angles to keep your audience wanting more.

As creativity wanes, the content itself can suffer — becoming generic, uninspired or nearly identical to what’s already out there. This tanks reader engagement as well as SEO effectiveness.

Overworked, creativity-starved content creators aren’t at their best. They’ll find it difficult to provide content that meets the quality and originality standards necessary to keep both audiences and search engines interested.

3. Scaling Content Production

Scaling content production is another SEO function that can be problematic, especially in the case of smaller teams or businesses aiming to expand their online presence.

As content demand continually grows, it becomes even more critical to balance quality and quantity.

Transitioning from producing a handful of content pieces per month to managing an extensive content calendar can strain any business. The increased workload requires additional hands and an efficient process — that is, if you don’t want to sacrifice quality.

Without adequate infrastructure and resources in place, any attempts at scaling can result in inconsistency, missed deadlines and reduced content quality — all of which can negatively impact SEO performance.

4. SEO Complexity

Producing content for both humans and search engines is an intricate balancing act.

SEO requires you to pay careful attention to various details — keyword integration, meta descriptions, alt tags, internal linking and readability are among them. Each piece should meet these technical requirements while still providing value to the audience.

5. Waning Budgets

Gartner reports that many businesses do not allocate a marketing budget at all. Average budgets have decreased from 9.1% of revenues in 2023 to 7.7% of company revenues by 2024 on average.

Gartner chart showing the average fall of budgets to post-pandemic low.

AI as a Collaborative Partner

Now let’s look at how AI serves as a solution to common obstacles in SEO content creation.

1. Alleviating Time and Resource Constraints

AI-driven content creation tools, including content generators and research assistants, make content creation easy by taking tedious and lengthy tasks off of businesses’ plates.

For example, AI can do a lightning-fast analysis of a topic, come up with a list of relevant keywords and draft detailed initial content outlines. With all of this work done for them, human creators are free to focus on the strategic aspects of content creation, like message refinement and alignment with the brand’s identity and target audience.

When utilized as a collaborative tool, AI helps brands publish on a consistent schedule without any negative impacts to quality, even when resources are hard to come by.

2. Combating Creativity Fatigue

AI combats creativity fatigue by providing inspiration and new perspectives. AI-driven tools deliver enlightening insights that help to spark new content ideas and angles.

On top of that, AI-powered writing assistants can suggest alternative phrasings, structures or even entire paragraphs. Features like these eliminate writer’s block and add a creative edge to blogs, website copy and other content that might have come out stale.

3. Scaling Content Production with AI

AI-powered content generation tools can produce a first draft of text in minutes. Human editors can then refine these drafts in less time than creating a first draft on their own in many cases.

Plus, since AI can automate various parts of the content creation process — like keyword research, content structuring and even proofing — businesses can use their human resources for tasks that are more strategic in nature.

This is valuable for businesses looking to expand their SEO program.

4. Simplifying SEO Complexity

AI tools can perform real-time content analysis and suggest quality improvements, keyword placement and links.

For example, our AI-powered writing assistant, PreWriter.ai, gives keyword suggestions for topics, internal and external link suggestions and more.

This allows businesses to focus on crafting valuable content for their audience while AI assists in suggesting foundational optimization tactics.

5. Optimizing Budgets in a Tight Economy

Considering the ever-shrinking marketing budget, there’s ample room for cost-effective solutions that boost ROI – AI is a big one.

Gartner states, “CMOs are consistently asked to ‘do more with less.’ And AI is turbocharging transformation, turning technology from an enabler of marketing work into yet another disruption poised to challenge marketing’s value proposition.”

Companies devote anywhere between 5%-12% of their marketing activities to using AI for marketing activities. When properly implemented and utilized, AI allows once stagnant SEO projects to gain steam so businesses remain competitive in today’s economy.

Best Practices for Incorporating AI into Your SEO Content Workflow

Incorporating AI into your content creation process can enhance efficiency and help SEO programs move forward faster. But it’s important to approach this integration thoughtfully.

Here are some best practices to ensure that AI becomes a valuable addition to your workflow:

Start Small

When introducing AI into your content creation workflow, starting with one or two tools is wise. This allows you to test how AI fits into your existing processes — and deep dive into the tools — without overwhelming your team.

For example, you might begin with an AI tool that generates content ideas, outlines and text to edit, and then one that helps proof your content.

As you become more comfortable with these tools and see their benefits, you can gradually scale up and integrate more AI solutions into different stages of your content creation process.

Maintain Quality Control

AI can handle many aspects of content creation, yet human oversight must always remain part of this process. Although they are powerful, AI tools lack the nuance and understanding that humans bring.

Always ensure that any content produced or modified using AI undergoes human review in order to maintain quality, tone and accuracy in your writing.

AI should enhance, not replace the human touch that makes content distinctive and captivating.

Balance AI and Creativity

Although AI can offer valuable insights and automate certain tasks, to achieve the biggest impact, you need human creativity.

AI may suggest topics, draft content and optimize for SEO, but the real magic happens with human input. Creative input from your team ensures that any message created resonates effectively with its intended target audience.

Encourage your team to look at AI as a tool that enhances their creative process instead of a solution that dictates it.

Final Thoughts

Effective SEO is at the center of search engine visibility and business expansion. AI-powered writing assistance is a game-changer that addresses the common challenges of SEO content creation.

But the key to success lies in thoughtful integration. By embracing AI as a collaborative partner, you can transform your SEO efforts, overcome obstacles and drive growth in your online presence.
